It is in the Drôme region, where they have both lived for many years, that ErikM and Julien Corda first met.
From this encounter emerged a project built around an unstable balance between two forms of instrument-making that respond to one another without resembling each other. On the one hand, Julien Corda has, for several years, been developing electroacoustic forms of instrument-making—modular and mechanical percussion—which he explores notably through the project Primitif. On the other, ErikM, a musician working with digital concrete and a visual artist, creates his own electronic devices, combining the détourning of tools borrowed from the entertainment industry or radio broadcasting with the creation of digital instruments.
The duo emerges from this entanglement: on one side, a practice of rhythm and phasing; on the other, a practice of space and interference. In their respective ways, both artists explore an aesthetic close to minimalist and iterative music, at times shamanic or concrete, in which acoustic space becomes an extremely malleable material. In their presentation, the automata evoke the loudspeakers of the Ondes Martenot; sound is absorbed and reprocessed like a jet in peril, through the Idiosyncrasy, ErikM’s hybrid device, combining a digital Theremin, a tactile surface, live streaming and memory.
Designed to be performed both in stereo and in quadraphonic sound, the project will be presented for the first time at MIAM in a three-dimensional AFC (Audio Field Control) environment.
