HEMU - Music in motion

How Can Movement Become Music?

This concert presents the first explorations emerging from an intensive three-day workshop dedicated to gesture-based musical control and immersive sound, held at MIAM with students from the Master’s programme in Music Project Creation (MCPM) at HEMU – Haute École de Musique.

Bringing together an international group of students from five different countries, from Switzerland, Europe and beyond, the workshop provided an opportunity to collectively explore new creative possibilities at the intersection of gesture, movement, digital sound and interactive technologies.

Using innovative gesture controllers and interfaces, participants experimented with new ways of interacting with sound, developing augmented instruments and imagining new forms of musical performance.

The concert will showcase the outcomes of this ongoing work: collaborative creations combining acoustic instruments, voices and electronics, with movement acting as the intermediary element. The evening will also feature an exceptional live performance by Gilbert Nouno, an internationally renowned composer and sound artist.

The workshop is led by Patricia Alessandrini, Head of the Master’s programme in Music Project Creation at HEMU, and Gilbert Nouno, professor at the Geneva University of Music (HEM), with the participation of composer and sound artist Viola Yip, a lecturer of the Sound Arts department at Bern University of the Arts (HKB).

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to MIAM for welcoming us and making it possible to hold this concert in its spaces.

We would also like to thank Mari Kimura, CEO of Mugic, for her valuable advice and support in exploring and integrating this innovative gesture-based technology into our musical creative practices.
