AS PART OF THE BELLUARD BOLLWERK FESTIVAL
Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the Russian government has instrumentalised nuclear blackmail as a dominant political rhetoric, turning the anticipation of catastrophe into a daily condition. Nuclear threat operates not only as military strategy but as atmosphere – diffuse, persistent, embodied. Switzerland is the only country in Europe able to shelter its entire population in case of a nuclear strike. In their new site-specific creation, Elina Kulikova and Dima Efremov – Russian artists in exile – look at the inside of an operational bunker, where security becomes architecture: regulated, measured, materially enforced. BLAST examines how nuclear anxiety transcends geopolitics. The bunker becomes a dispositif where state power and private fear intersect, exposing the psychological and corporeal cost of living under the continuous possibility of annihilation.
